Finally a Library in Grenada!

July 2, 2013

“The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library.”

― Albert Einstein

Black Girl Reading

In the case of Grenada, we all know the location of the library but now we want to know the location of a functioning library or, at least, a library in the making. We have an answer for you…

2nd Floor, Arnold John Building, Melville Street, in the heart of the capital.

Yes, despite the fact that the national library has been abandoned for almost two years exactly, the people are taking matters into their own hands. We can sit around and lament that this is government’s job OR we can do something about it. You are a vital part of this equation though. Mt Zion Library, homework and reading centre is being initiated by members of the Mt. Zion Full Gospel Revival Fellowship but your help is needed in raising the remaining $710US $410US $250US for this 1st phase by July 10th! Only 9 Days!

Oonya Kempadoo, novelist and social development researcher, is a key coordinator in the process of bring this library into being. This project has the support of three facilitating partners because we believe deeply in creating access to books but also access to a homework support program, which is a key component of the Mt. Zion Library:

  • Hands Across The Sea: An organization committed to  to promote children’s literacy and assist schools and libraries in Caribbean communities
  • Uprising: Co-founded by Damarlie Antoine, this is a youth advocacy movement that promotes positive change through performance art and poetry.
  • and Us! Groundation Grenada

This project has come a long way in the few months since its conception.  This space has two rooms, one will be a children’s library and the other a general library. It is a modest space but it is a necessary start in a nation where you can’t find a bookstore. See details of what your donation will go towards here. If you cannot donate online contact to organize donating in person.  One of the biggest ways you can support this initiative is by SPREADING THE WORD! We have just 9 DAYS LEFT to support this initiative and raise only $710US $410US $250US. Together we can do this!

Groundation Grenada is a youth led social action collective, founded in 2009, which focuses on the use of creative media to assess the community’s needs, raise consciousness and act to create positive radical growth.  We pursue our mission online, through, and this year began expanding to live events and special projects in collaboration with local, regional and international artists and activists. Groundation Grenada’s website supports both local and diasporic voices, acting as an interface to connect youth who are hungry for innovative change.
