Another year of Camp GLOW Grenada!
While the international arena boasts of many different languages and cultures, it has many common threads. Among those similarities is the tendency to view the world through the lens of inequality. Women around the world do not have access to equal opportunities and are often confined to a life centered on caring for a household. Meaning, a life limited to cooking, cleaning, and raising children. Opportunities to explore, test boundaries, discover, excel, and lead are difficult to come by.
For the second consecutive year Camp GLOW (Girls Leading our World) Grenada seeks to empower the young women of Grenada and Carriacou to provide them with the skills and tools they need to make their voices heard. The camp aims to inspire young girls. No dream is too big to chase. Any opportunity is within their hands, within their lifetime. See our article from last year about Camp Glow, here.
Camp GLOW is a week long, all girls summer camp. It was created by Peace Corps volunteers and their Grenadian counterparts. Last year’s camp was a huge success building a strong community of young women who were blown away to have an opportunity to grow in ways that the current school curriculum is prepared to support.
This year from the 23rd to 30th of July, thirty-five secondary school girls will participate in a week of workshops designed to encourage them to become leaders in their schools and communities. Specifically, these young women will address personal and professional development through the exploration of confidence, self-identity, and public speaking.
Each day of the week long camp is assigned a theme. For example, day one is Self-Discovery Day. Throughout the day the campers get the opportunity to participate in professional workshops and creative activities that relate to the day’s theme. For Self-Discovery Day, campers will create art pieces that represent how they view themselves by expressing both the positives and negatives. Afterwards they will participate in a series of discussions related to gender identity, body image, and shadeism. Each of these sessions encourages the young women to begin to question some of the stereotypes they may face in their communities. Ultimately, we hope that with the conclusion of camp, these young women will be able to view themselves in a more positive light.
GLOW Grenada hopes to empower the young women of tomorrow by giving them the opportunity to discover their passion, power, and voice.
