Seeking Counselors for Sleep-Away Camp for Secondary School Girls in Grenada!

April 11, 2012

What is the inspiration behind Camp Glow:Girls Leading Our World?

Teachers, advocates, and Peace Corps Volunteers saw a need for programs for teen girls to improve self-esteem, reduce domestic violence, discover post-secondary school opportunities, and learn about sexual health and healthy relationships. A camp seemed like a great way to teach girls about these topics in a fun and engaging manner. Camp GLOW also provides leadership training to empower the campers to share and act on the things they learned at camp with their peers, schools, and larger communities. The original Camp GLOW was started in 1995 by Peace Corps Volunteers and teachers in Romania. Since then, the camp has been adapted and implemented in over 20 countries worldwide. Grenada’s Peace Corps Volunteers and their Grenadian counterparts are proud and excited to start this camp in Grenada for the first time this summer!

What is the role of counselors in realizing this vision?

Counselors are absolutely vital in realizing the vision of Camp GLOW. They serve as mentors, role models, and cheerleaders for the girls. They have an amazing opportunity to direct youth in a promising direction while having fun! On a more practical level, they organize their groups, lead games and activities, and help out as needed, which is just as important.

How do you see counselors benefiting from this experience?

There are both tangible and intangible benefits to being a camp counselor. They receive training and experience in youth development, behavior management, etc. They also get to work in a collaborative, fun environment. For Camp GLOW, they will have access to great workshops and get letters of recommendation based on their performance.

Can you provide some logistical information for those readers interested in becoming a counselor?

I would love to know more about Camp GLOW… especially the program/pattern, counselor’s challenges, techniques of counseling to youth, and financial management as well. Because I will be organizing numbers of camp for youth, especially, in India.
