A few years ago right here on Groundation Grenada I saw a post about a new girls camp initiated by the Peace Corps that needed volunteers, Camp GLOW(Girls Leading Our World). I was looking for some kinda way to give back to my community and a sleep-away camp seemed like fun so I gave it a try. I got hooked!
Today I write as both co-director of Groundation Grenada and of Camp GLOW 2014. And this year, Camp GLOW needs your support!
Camp GLOW Grenada recruits 35 secondary school girls from Grenada, Carriacou, and Petit Martinique to attend a free leadership retreat. These young women devote a week to understanding the components of personal development, public speaking, post-secondary school career and education opportunities, healthy relationships, and community leadership. It is our hope that the students attending Camp GLOW will apply the knowledge and skills gained during camp to make positive and sustainable impacts in their schools and communities.
This journey/adventure that is Camp GLOW has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my
lifetime. I get to interact with today’s youth, empowering them with the skills to make a difference
in both their lives and the lives of those around them.
These brave young ladies attend camp were they may not know anyone, they are out of their comfort zone, trying things they’ve never tried before, learning in a safe space where no question is stupid and everyone is respected. I am extremely proud of each and everyone of them!
Now I need your help! It takes a lot to run a well organized and activity packed sleep-away camp We have to raise $3,000US to run Camp GLOW because it’s free for the girls.
Though the Peace Corp awards us a grant we need funds to match it. Your contribution will go directly to room, board, transportation and supplies. Please visit our online fundraising page, share it with your friends, family, co-workers and organizations! No donation is too small so give what you can.
